First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List ......................................................................... While I haven't had a new Pontiac "ever", I am darn sad to see them go. There have been plenty of them that I really liked the styling on. Personally, I've driven pickups since the '70's when I stopped using my bird as a daily driver.
As for the business aspects, I think a lot of the blame lies on our tax structure in the U.S. At some point immediate profits became the norm and companies stopped planning for the future. The tax structure for both companies and investors favored the quick buck. By what "bizarro world" logic does it make sense for one company to purchase a second company, gut it by selling off the profitable parts and end up keeping the marginally profitable carcass? When I grew up the reasons to purchase a second co. was to further your own companies long term profitablity and success. Remember when the motto was "keep your GM car all GM"? I think darn near every component in our 'birds when built was a GM component. I have no idea what the percentage is today, but I suspect that it is low. Instead of a car manufacturer, GM (and the rest) have become "car assemblers". Rant off, RIP Pontiac...
