First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List ......................................................................... Dudes, Yesterday I posted a note about wanting to pressure test the tank for my 68 Wagon. Well I truly appreciate the suggestions. I used the soapy water trick and held my hand over the gas tank inlet while putting in a few PSI of pressure, just as suggested. First the good news: No leaks at all from the tank itself. Pressurized just fine and didn't see any leaks at all. The odd and not so good news: My rebuilt fuel tank sending unit had a most unanticipated leak. There is a brass post on top of the sending unit that is about 1/4" long. That's where the gas gauge wire connects. Unfortunately when the tank is pressurized, it leaks ever so slightly there as evidenced by the soapy bubbles that keep growing in number as the pressure leaked out. Okay, so I have to ask yall, should I seal this, or doesn't it matter? After all, it's at the very top of the tank and it was really, really minor. Yet, somehow I don't think I could put it back in the car that way. I'm open for your opinions as to how to cure this.. The post just seems to be sealed by a couple of rubber washers on each side of the sending unit lid that are now hard as a rock from age and the only thing that holds it all together is one of those push on star washers that grabs the stud from inside the tank. I'm thinking that maybe I should just put a little POR15 epoxy putty around it on the outside of the sending unit, or maybe JB Weld. I'm open for suggestions.
