On an eBay purchase, my advice is to pay for an inspection before you
bid, if you can't personally inspect the car. I found out the hard way
that the PayPal protection doesn't apply if you don't have it inspected.
Ask the seller how recent the photos are. If they're several months old
you should ask for new pics. If they refuse, move on. My car had some
front end damage that didn't show up on the posted photos (it's a '69;
the front end is a nightmare to repair). It's easy to get a shipping
quote before you bid, which for my 'bird was close to $2000, so factor
that into your offer. And make sure the buyer states that he has clear
title to the car. Many of the older cars have had their registration
lapse, and depending on the states involved (yours and theirs), it may
be a hassle to re-register.

Good luck.

Hi All,

I am in the market, or will be fairly soon, for another '68. This time
a coupe that I will use as my daily driver. I have been watching ebay
and Hemmings to get an idea of the prices now (!) but I'm willing to
spend a little to get a really good, solid car. What I'm asking for
your help on is:

1. I've bought plenty of parts on ebay. But Spending $15,000 - 20,000
(or less; I have no problem with something cheaper!) on a car is
different. What is the safest way to do this?

2. This will be bird #4 (I still have #3, a Sprint convertible in
restoration and the others, both 350s, I restored as well). Any musings
or suggestions on things to watch out for (I believe in "two heads are
better than one")?

Thanks for your ideas and input.

Dan
