First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List ......................................................................... Brent,
I did that to my previous Bird some years ago. It was a '68 which I added headrests to. My plan was to use the '68 cushion together with a '69 backrest structure covered with '68 upholstery, just as you say. I used the backrests from a '70,5 Camaro which I believe has the same inner structure as the '69. When the seat foam was removed I found the structure to be quite different between 68 and 70 though. In '68 there was separate metal springs and foam, in '69 and on the springs were moulded inside the foam. Therefore the metal structures differ. I solved it by swapping just the top beam of the structure. It's spot welded in and some of the welds were already broken. When you recover the seats I would advise you to also replace the springs. Mine were totally shot. On the driver side 5 out of 8 were broken off. My reupholsterer talked me into just mending the old ones which I regretted. The springs must get weak by age cause I sat like crap in my super expensive reupholstered driver seat. The passenger seat felt a lot better though. Anyway, that car is long gone now. Will do the same to my new Bird? Not sure. I'm kinda tempted to put some better seats in there but still want the old look. /Niklas ........................................................................ . I assume this is CI Which reminds me. If the Canuck dollar continues its climb I am looking at purchasing a complete set of black deluxe seat covers, lower & back foam, knobs and possibly headrests. I am mixing my original seat bottom frames with 1969 seat backs that have the head rests. (Thanks to my Houston HALF friends) I plan on sand blasting, repairing any broken wires or clips and powder coating the frames black before re-covering them. Now my questions: 1) I believe that the 1968 & 1969 seat bottoms are the same (please correct me if I'm wrong) but I'm not sure about the backs. Do I order 1968 or 1969 deluxe seat covers and foam now that these are mixed? (I'm hoping the 69 covers and foam are larger for added comfort and plan on overstuffing them as much as possible) 2) Do I re-upholster the headrests (foam in rough shape) or purchase new re-pros? 3) Do they consider upholstery "Discount Exempt" I would appreciate any & all advice guys.
