The theory I've seen discussed is that the old points ignition used 6 to 9 volts after the ballast resistor and the HEI uses the full 12 and the extra voltage can either throw the tach off by 1000 or eventually smoke it all together. Sounds logical to me without fully knowing how the tach signal is generated and received/processed by the individual components.

I see no reason why your tach won't work with the HEI. It's the same idea as hooking up to the negative side of the coil. The said my hood tach would not work with an MSD box, and it did. They said the same with my uniltite. What I would do ? get it together and see. If you need to buy a tach adapter, then so be it. Do let this stymie you. One thing is for sure, you will not blow up the tach. It just won't understand the signal and read zero. Another option, buy the tach and find a buddy with a running car and a HEI. Try it out... just a few jumpers and you are on your way. you can always return it.. "jeez, the tach was not what I expected" then go to plan B joe ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Submissions to Firebird-L: <[email protected]> Unsubscribe from Firebird-L: <[email protected]> Help: <http://FirstGenFirebird.org/firebird/Firebird-L.html> Classifieds: <http://FirstGenFirebird.org/ubb/> Owner Pictures: <http://FirstGenFirebird.org/show/> ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Submissions to Firebird-L: <[email protected]> Unsubscribe from Firebird-L: <[email protected]> Help: <http://FirstGenFirebird.org/firebird/Firebird-L.html> Classifieds: <http://FirstGenFirebird.org/ubb/> Owner Pictures: <http://FirstGenFirebird.org/show/>
