When I had my 64 T-bird the hood woujld only stay half up (after I oiled the hinges, before I oiled them it stayed about 7/8ths up). I bought new repo springs and the hood would only stay 3/4 up. I bought some relatively small springs at ACE that would fit inside the main springs and were an approriate length and they gave the neeed extra boost to make the hood stay up.

I recall someone said they put springs from a different car inside the OEM springs. I think it was springs from a volvo, but I'm not sure now. This gave a bit more support to balance the weight of the hood. I would try that before removing the original springs.
