Yes, the inner springs of the hood hinges of early 80`s Volvos work 
great....the Volvo with creased hood (not the ttal flat hood)...You can fish 
them out of the volvo hinges and into the Firebird hinges with out removing 
hinges...also ,they barely sshow up after installed...but as Volvo hinges are 
the color of the car, you`d best paint them flat black before installing...
 
I call mine Viagra springs! they give that eaxtra lift!  lol

I recall someone said they put springs from a different car inside the OEM 
springs.  I think it was springs from a volvo, but I'm not sure now.  This gave 
a bit more support to balance the weight of the hood.   I would try that before 
removing the original springs.  It could take a while to get all the settings 
correct on aftermarket springs that bring the hood back  into correct alighment.
