Please try firebug 1.5a6 or 1.4b2 from http://getfirebug.com/releases.
Firebug 1.4 is compatible with Firefox 3.0 and this is the combination we have developed and tested. Addons.mozilla.org has a version of Firebug 1.4b2 that only installs in Firefox 3.5.
