I've never seen this happen and it is not by design. Since it is
really weird I suggest you install Firebug in a new Firefox profile.
If you still have the problem we can look into the cause. But I can't
explain how to use Firebug UI to stop this behavior because it is
simply not working correctly.

I will admit that Firebug cannot work in some profiles because of
other extensions or problems in that profile. If you want to use that
old profile and you want to use Firebug I don't see any other option.
This has nothing to do with Firebug being friendly, though really we
like to think it is.
