That is not how Firebug 1.4 works.

Firebug 1.4 remains synchronized with my tabs at all times. If it does
not happen for you then I guess you have a problem in you
configuration, perhaps another extension is causing an error. You can
try:
1) Firebug Icon > Options > Reset all Options....Does it help?
2) Install 1.4X, the tracing version: do you see ERRORS? See

3) Install Firebug in a new firefox profile: does that fix it? See
