I really don't think the 1.4 UI is all so confusing. Rather I think
now that we had a very curious "social-networking enhanced bug".
Here's what I think happened:

We made some changes to the UI. A couple of design mistakes started a
lot of discussion. Silently and unknown to anyone, a bug in a Firefox
component causes the UI to fail for some users all of the time.

The design discussions and the hidden bug get confused: Firebug users
think every problem is a design problem; Firebug developers think
every design complaint is really poor communications (ours or users)
or conflict with another extension. Legitimate problems in the design
are lost because the hidden bug confused every discussion.

So the software bug was made much worse by the social network:
discussions obscured rather than illuminated the underlying problem.

Too bad too, because I think the 1.4 activation solution is pretty
good but needs some changes while some users think the solution is bad
and can't be salvaged. Hopefully 1.5a21 will be start on recovering.
