I've been suffering this problem, and had problems with other
extensions too (Xmarks and Web Developer).

This morning my computer did a lengthy Windows Update. Shortly after
that Firefox popped up a message to say that two Windows Add-ons were
considered likely to interfere with other add-ons, did I want them
disabled. You bet I did ! So I accepted. Firefox restarted, and all
my extensions have been OK since. (Fingers crossed).

The two miscreants are Plug-ins: Windows Presentation Foundation
(which you can disable) and another called something like
'Windows .NET helper', which I can't actually find, so perhaps FF
uninstalled it.

Firebug is now visible, and can be launched and run (though I've not
tested exhaustively).

I suggest anyone with a similar problem should disable the 'Windows
Presentation Foundation' plug-in, and see what happens from there.

Good Luck,
Tim Dawson
