Firebug was working fine, no issues. I upgrade firefox 3.5.4 to 3.5.5
through the Ubuntu Update Manager. After restarting Firefox, Firebug
no longer works.

What changed:
I upgrade firefox 3.5.4 to 3.5.5 through Update Manager.

Symptons:
Firebug icon in the bottom bar is grayed-out.
    Tools->Firebug submenu will not open.
Crtl+F12 open new window with expected menus and tabs, but nothing
in the content area.
HTML tab show code-folding marks but no HTML code.
All items in Console tab drop-down menu are unchecked and cannot
be checked. Clicking only closes menu.

Attempted solutions:
    First I tried:
        - disabling firebug
        - restarting fierfox
        - enabling firebug
        - restarting firefox
    -- no go.
    Then I tried:
        - uninstalling firebug
        - closing firefox
        - removing the firebug extension directory
        - starting firefox
        - installing firebug
        - restarting firefox
    -- still no go.

Versions:
    Ubuntu 9.10 ( x86_64 )
    Firefox 3.5.5+nobinonly-0ubuntu0
    Firebug 1.4.5

I can provide any additional data requested.
