I've had this problem also. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit with Firefox
3.5 and firebug 1.4.5.

When clicking the icon in the status bar, pressing F12 or trying
VIEW>FIREBUG, each time nothing happened. (I also tried to run firebug
with portable Firefox which has always worked on vista and XP, without
success; and also Firefox 3.6).

However, I've just installed a test version of 64-bit Firefox
(Namaroka) from www.mozilla-x86-64.com and this seems to work with
firebug. I haven't used firebug fully to be able to tell you if it's
buggy or not as I've just installed it, but my initial test seemed ok.

Hope this helps.
