Okay, I have now managed to get back to where I was yesterday. I closed Firefox, moved the entire profile directory to a temporary location and then reloaded the profile directory from the overnight automatic backups. When I restarted Firefox everything was back to the way it was yesterday with Firebug working fine (albeit with the missing JavaScript). I was even able to drop back to FBTrace 1.8b2 (the last one that produced tracing in the Logs window) and that also operates as it did the other day.
I now have copies in a temporary location of the profile I restored this morning from backups and the profile that rendered Firebug inoperable after installing FBTrace 1.8b4. I am hoping that by comparing the files in the two profiles it may be possible to narrow down what broke Firebug. I can either try to do this myself (with a bit of guidance as to what to look for) or can zip them up and email them to anyone that wants to look at them.
