This is a tough one, because I know plenty of people and former partners
who claim to know x+y=z, or even authored x or y. Even though every 18
months or so, they leave their current employer and start all over again.
Not saying this is bad thing, but to take x from abc company to def
company over and over again can get old unless no one catches one. You
can only do this so many times until you cycle through most of the
companies out there. It takes some time to get respected or hated by the
major majority. Once you garned complete hatred or respect by vendors,
long time associates and other lurkers on the list, then one can claim
they know X. Y is a lot harder, since one has to known X completely to
find Y, and if one sums them up to = Z, then one really doesn't have a
life beyond their Internet connection.. -:)

It really isn't about when hiring someone, ask WHY, it is really about,
can a potential candidate solve a technical problem with multiple
variables, imaginary numbers, exponentials, and differential calculus to
boot in a nasty politically ridden environment and be successful??

To pass an exam you only need to know x+y=z.

It is easy to learn x+y=z, it is a lot harder to know HOW or WHY.

To do most IT security work you need to know why.

When hiring someone, ask WHY.
