Title: RE: Cable Modem security
There are two types of VPN: one where you have a node and you want to connect into a remote network through an untrusted network, and another where you have a bunch of nodes, and your hiding them all behind a NAT device.  I wonder if @home is talking about the latter instead of the former.  This is because the latter would cause more traffic (on the more people are looking up more things type analogy) then the former.  If its the former they want to stop, good luck, there are lots of programs that will tunnel over almost any medium you can find.  I've seen NFS implemented by email, that would be difficult to pick up on.

Well actually they could simply examine the protocol type that is being transmitted.  If they see IP Protocol 50 they would know that it is IPSEC traffic and assume that you are using a VPN.

I'd tell them to quit looking at my packets, or be sued for invasion of privacy.  Their job is to carry IP packets.  The only way to know if I'm running VPN is to snoop inside them.

I've seen alot of talk about cable modem security (or lack of) and I've got
an interesting twist to the story. I'm curious if anyone else has run
across this.

I have cable modem service at home. I have a firewall set up and
occasionally I connect through a VPN tunnel to a local office or to the
corporate office to transfer files or to download email. Well....my cable
modem provider just changed the subscriber agreement. Basically it says
that if I use a VPN or a VPN tunneling protocol on their network my service
will be terminated! I can't believe that I'm going to have to change
providers because I'm protecting my data!

Has anyone else run into this?

Val
