Richard, I just cannot keep up with you. Here, the firewall-wizards list. You're posting everywhere. What have you against ICSA? I sent this to the fw-wizards (and it hasn't shown up yet). Richard, none of what you say is substantiated by a visit to their web page. It couldn't be clearer that 1) they are for profit, 2) they have commercial services, and 3) they ARE a membership organization and have been for 10 years. Fred I probably should have this be a one line message, but those of you who know me know how difficult I would find that. :-) I should just write, "But ICSA is and has been a membership association for 10 years... whatever are you talking about Richard?" I consult to ICSA occasionally, and I was involved with ICSA/NCSA when I was the TIS rep for the Firewalls Consortium for a few years. That's my disclosure... :-) I'm not paid to defend them. I don't think they need a defense, but since you don't know that they are an association and have been for 10 years, I thought it worth a post. I don't know how much of their revenue comes from membership now, but NCSA did start off as a membership organization, and is an association. You paid your membership dues, you received the publication, newsletters, book reviews, etc. It has been an industry association, with a mailing list and with conferences since 1989 or so. Still is. You can join as an individual for US$95 a year. See their membership page. Easy to find. You were probably joking about the naming of NCSA, but in case you were serious, I think the naming is coincidental. I've been around awhile, and when the National Computer Security Association picked its name in 1989, I don't think I had heard of the National Center for Supercomputer Applications. No one in 1989 foresaw Mosaic or the web. (Though, perhaps their name change from NCSA to ICSA was so people would associate them with the International Customer Service Association, those sneaks! :-)) Associations do not have to be non-profit. Organizations that call themselves "independent" don't have to be nonprofit. I'm an independent consultant. But I like to make a profit. I like it very much. I think we all understand the differences. I don't understand the fuss. Comments like these surface every time ICSA announces something that might be of interest. There is nothing new.
