The question is too general to be answered. It depends on numerous things:
a. What are your requirements (just Email, Workflow engine, Email only)
b. What are your clients?
c. What expertise you have?
d. How much money you want to spend?
e. What control functions you need?
Depending on those a better answer can be given.
With NT and POP3/SMTP Mail for a workgroup of users - there are better
products Then exchange.
With Unix - there is lots of freeware.
