When I dealt with ANS (a few years ago now), their product was a
turn-key package including everything from the ISP service, the hardware
for the firewall, the software for the firewall, 24X7 system and network
monitoring and system support. All you had to do was administer the
policies. It was strictly an application proxy firewall. I found the box
to be very stable and their tech support to be very responsive and
technically capable. I do have to add that once they were purchased by
America Online, the wait time for tech support increased significantly
(from 0 to 20 min.). Also, this approach will certainly be problematic
for internal firewalls (if they are to provide system support).
FW-1 is an inspection firewall and can handle much more traffic (in my
experience). While we have had some problems and currently are
experiencing what appears to be a rather serious memory leak, our usage
has increase many orders of magnitude, so it's hard to say if the ANS
box could have done any better.
