So I found a few answers.  The best by far is to use a few AUI/TCP
transceivers back to back.  These devices have separate data and control
pins so one can snip the data pins without affecting control signals (such
as the link heartbeat).

problem with this is that you will not get 100Mbps, or so the thread went.
