I'm just beginning my search for a low cost firewall/filter to provide
logging and advanced filtering for a protected segment on our internal
network.

I currently have a full blown firewall architecture at the entry points to
the network but the firewalls it employs are too expensive and feature rich
for this smaller task. I would like to segment off a small number of
sensitive unix servers. No proxys are required, just detailed logging and
filtering capabilities.

Through-put is important, but most of the applications accessing the servers
are telnet based. At most I anticipate 300 simultaneous sessions.

At this point I'm not interested in using authentication, I'm more
interested in obtaining very granular logging and filtering at a reasonable
cost ($0-2000) per application.

Any recommendations or ideas would be appreciated.
