Actually, some can. The last batch of Compaq drives I received had a
write protect jumper. Once set it only allowed read-only access to any
partitions on the drive. Good for /etc, /usr/local/bin, etc. Not so good
for /tmp, /dev, etc. Completely useless for NT as you can not break out
partitions to write protect.
