I do understand this aspect. But what I don't understand is that people on
this list are recommending a product that has so many unknowns about it. I
am wary of unknowns and a complete lack of corporate $ for technical
support/development to the product.
I am very surprised that I would see "blanket" recommendations of a product
with no real reasoning and/or thought behind them. At least none that is
being conveyed to us "lurkers".
I think its relatively easy and inexpensive to install WinGate. Its only
$40 for a 3-user at-home license. Would I recommend it to anyone? Hell no.
WinGate has too many known exploits.
BlackIce on the other hand has a good track record for just $40 for the
personal version - that also comes with a year of tech support. ZoneAlarm
has... its free and "its so easy to use a monkey could set it up".
This scares me. Most firewall products are somewhat difficult to configure
for a reason, and its not to make it difficult for the end-admin. Its
because a secure and well configurable firewall is a tricky beast to
configure.
Anyway, this still doesn't answer my question of pros and cons (beside the
money issue). I have never used Zone Alarm, so I have nothing to base basic
product functionality against.

There are only to reasons to pick ZoneAlarm over BlackIce.
1. Its free!
2. It is so easy to set it up a Monkey could do it.
What more do you need than that. Really it is simple to use and really fast
to set up maybe 10 minutes start to finish, if your slow. It does do a
pretty
decent job. It also does not seem to add enough overhead to notice. I can
host a game of 8 people and still run my zonealarm without any lags.
Black Ice may be more secure that I haven't seen proof of but it did cause
me lag time so I know it added alot more overhead. Other than that not a
darn bit of difference.
