Isn't binding to Meta a bad idea? Doesn't X11 "reserve" meta keys, so
most meta-key events don't get passed on to shell programs running in
an xterm?

Alt's probably a good idea. All PC keyboards have that key labelled
alt, and most Mac keyboards have it labelled "Option/Alt".
