Alt+Fn and Crl+Alt+<key> may be used by the window manager or desktop,
but as far as I know Alt+<letter> is up for grabs by the program. 
Still perhaps it is better to consistently use Control as a modifier
to alpha-numeric keys, and use Alt only when Control cannot be used
(arrow-keys, Backspace, etc.).
