There actually is a gitter channel already -
        https://gitter.im/fish-shell/fish-shell. I believe that should
        satisfy
        most issues raised here, no?

From the gitter.im <http://gitter.im> page when I followed your
link: "FREE FOR ROOMS UP TO 25 PEOPLE". So, it appears to be
targeted at small to medium sized open-source development teams.
It's clearly not meant to be a mechanism for users to communicate
with the developers. So, no, gitter does not satisfy the issues
I've raised. However, I do agree that it appears to be a pretty
cool tool for the core developers to communicate in real-time.

P.S., That gitter URL should be documented in the source tree
(even if just in the README.md).

I see that I misunderstood the "up to 25 people" statement on the gitter.im <http://gitter.im> main page. As @faho pointed out to me on gitter.im <http://gitter.im> that limit only applies to private rooms such as would be used by a development team for discussions free from external input. It does not apply to the type of public room the fish project is currently using at https://gitter.im/fish-shell/fish-shell.

I heartily recommend replacing the IRC channel with the gitter.im <http://gitter.im> public room. It's tight integration with GitHub is a huge positive IMO. Updating the documentation is easy. What else needs to be done? For example, what about the travis-ci messages? How hard would it be to create a bot to respond to any new message on IRC #fish with the gitter.im <http://gitter.im> URL?

The downside to that is for those of us that use IRC heavily its one more place to monitor presumably from another client or tool (worse if its a browser) I must say despite the fact im frequently in upto 20 IRC channels #fish is the only one in OFTC rather then freenode.
