*So, I desparately want to be wrong. I want to believe that you can do
*remoting, today, without FES.

There seems to be some major misunderstanding here. Of course you can.

First, Flash doesn't cut support for old technologies it supports. AVM2 is here but AVM is still in. On2 VP6 codec is here but Spark is still in. AMF2 is going to be the standard for apps targeting F8.5 , but apps targeting say Flash 8 in Flash 8.5 Player still support AMF.

When Flash Player 8.5 is final, it will still support every piece of Flash 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 & FutureSplash content out there (except the occasional bug here and there which if happens, is fixed in acceptable time frame) together with their audio, video and communication protocols.

*want to do some flex stuff right away, but I must be able to attach to
*my current AMF based infrastructure and I dont want to wait or pay for
*Enterprise Services.

Doing some flex (flex 2 I presume) stuff right away for anything but the purposes of testing would be a bad idea. Yes Flex 2 and Flash 8.5 is here... but they are *ALPHA*. We're good months before the player being out and maybe more than year away than it being mainstream.

So my suggestion is instead of worrying about it, just use MTASC, Flex 1, Flash 8 Pro or MX2004, AMF PHP or whatever you have, since it works right now, and will continue to work even in Flash 8.5, 9, 10, 11, 12... :)
