If you are using Mindmanager, you will probably like Compendium. It includes support for transclusion which allows a map of multiple dimensions to be created easily. This eliminates the need for all of the arrows in MindManager. It is FREE and easy to install (can use your existing JVM but includes one in the install if you do not have JAVA installed) and runs on Windows, Linux and Mac. It can use MySQL as its database or you can use the built-in database. You can use both at once and convert from one to the other very painlessly. It can produce HTML output but because of the multi-dimensional nature of the maps that can be produced, it does not include output to linear documents (MS-Word for example) You can extend it with your own notation if you have some ideas about visual representation.
