I'm not sure what you mean by 8-bit smilies. Do you mean 8-bit color? You can set the text color with HTML, or you could embed an image tag and put an image in-line with the text. Or do you mean 8-bit, as in ANSI--i.e., >200 possible emoticons? You could create a custom font for that.
