Well, MXML and AS3 are used for different things in a typical Flex application. MXML is much better than AS3 for "layout manager" stuff. AS3 is much better than MXML for everything else. So a typical Flex app uses both appropriately. Any Flex programmer will, in fact, know AS3 because you can't write a useful Flex app with MXML alone. Well, maybe you could, but I really wouldn't want to try.
