I do recommend AS3, but you're far from the last doing AS2. I just finished up a 4-month AS2 contract, and last I heard, they were still looking for contractors who know AS2. When you have an extensive app or Web site built in AS2, switching to AS3 is really tough, especially when it's a popular site and expanding rapidly. There are lots of legacy AS2 gigs out there. I would still become an AS3 expert. That's where the real action is. Plus, you can use cool tools like Flex/FlexBuilder/Flashbuilder, and AS3 is just plain better than AS2.
