Consider a track ball it works in a very small space. Also look at a keyboard draw if your desk could handle a few wood screws inserted from below into the top. My "desk" consists of an internal Door (flat veneered type) supported on a metal book case at one end and a small desk at the other so I have both keyboard draw and trackball.
