It wasn't intended as a snide or snarky comment so much as a realization of
fact. The pool of top notch CW ops is getting smaller and smaller as time
goes by. Yes, new people are learning the code and using it on the air but
that pool *is* getting smaller, primarily as the expert ops die.

I am becoming a Pactor proponent also. (I was going to roll my own and
learned just how good PACTOR is as I tried to come up with something
better.) As far as I can tell it is far and away the best error-free
adaptive HF modem technology out there today.

And with any phone mode you learn all kinds of new ways to mangle messages.
My students (6th-8th grades) practice sending messages back and forth with
the students of Wilson High School in Long Beach. (Their net is Wednesdays
at 2330z on 7185kHz, guest check-ins invited.) They very quickly discovered
just how error-prone phone communications is. Most are starting to gravitate
toward running digital modes with fldigi.
