That's pretty sad. You have my condolences.
However, to be fair, I should say when I did a 10.10 upgrade at work and
the login screen broke; no list of users, no way to type anything in.
It seems that this problem plagues many distributions (arch, for example).
It turned out to be an obscure permissions problem which I still don't
understand, but there is a workaround:
The workaround is unpleasant because the program is suid to root so
shouldn't be o+x, and isn't on other machines, in fact.

If this was your problem, it's not going to be any better on Ubuntu.

As you know I've been using Debian testing. On the 6th they moved it to
stable. They had a last minute upgrade of several packages. In their
rush they broke several things, one of which was the log on screen. I
could no longer log in. Fixed it twice, then the whole thing went
belly up.
Being the intelligent person I am, I simply installed 10.04, so I'm
back to Ubuntu. May be a long while before I try Debian again. Luckily
everything thing important was backed up.
