Yes, it needs to be done as root. A newbie will have to learn how to
sudo rm -rf /
.... ahem... I mean...
sudo "cd /usr/local;tar xvf ~/fldigi-3.21.2.tgz"
But then, there's the pet file for puppy, Kamal's ppa for ubuntu, and
that other archive for RPM packages.
