The second version looks great too. Maybe you could try using the arc graphic to look like it is wrapping the letters. Dont know if that's possible at all. I'm not a designer so just saying a quick thought of mine. :)
I have to admit though that I like the first one more but I would prefer the second because of the readability issues.
