I do it manual in the descriptor file. Also the A.B.C-SNAPSHOT will fail, when you try to create an AIR package. Maybe you want to use <versionLabel>, which has no restrictions.
See decriptor file info: A string value of the format <0-999>.<0-999>.<0-999> that represents application version which can be used to check for application upgrade.
