Don't know about Vista but as a professional software developer you 
should use some sort of source code versioning system like SVN or CVS. 
Then you are not exposed to unwanted OS behavior. And you should ALWAYS 
backup the code repository before performing any change to the system 
containing the source code repository. Developing software without the 
use of a good reliable source code versioning system is like jumping of 
a cliff, a not so very sensible act to perform.
