have you considered using a sub renderer as an editor.
on the adg you have a rendererProviders which allow you to alter the
individual rows,
var t:AdvancedDataGridRendererProvider = new
AdvancedDataGridRendererProvider();
t.depth = 2;
t.columnIndex = 1;
t.columnSpan = 0;
t.rowSpan = ...
etc. I have found this class very useful when dealing with the ADG.
