Not sure what your back end is, but I am using Java on the back end and have found it very easy to use the iText library to create PDF reports. The iText library is very simple to use and creates nice tabular reports (no GUI though). I do it by using a navigateToURL that targets a new window... the URL passes the printing option params to my back end Servlet... all nice and seamless.

OK, Flex is wonderful, but eventually the end user is gonna want some
reports. Simple, basic, printable tabular reports.

What tools are the folks here using?

What would I like? I would like a tool similar to flex, but oriented
towards paper. Basically a gui to build the report layout, with
bindable fields and a backend language to do everything else. The last
piece would be a report renderer that output PDF. It would be nice if
it output Excel as well, but not a requirement.

What would I like to avoid? BI! I don't really want a full blown tool
that tries to be everything to everybody, Don't want the care and
feeding of a server, don't need users to create their own reports,
don't need report criteria entry.

I do want to be able to integrate the runtime easily from Flex by
passing report criteria from user actions to the report, so that it
looks like one seamless application.

Any suggestions?
