Go to Ely's site, quietlyscheming.com, and check out his Custom Flex 
Charts. The Date Selection example does what you're looking for in 
selecting multiple columns in a chart by constructing a selection 
from mouseDown to mouseUp. The code is very clean and you might be 
able to adapt it.
