Actually, if you want to be really traditional (and pedantic) and go back to
the old Latin, he is right. It was originally called 'sinus wave'. It has
the same derivation as the word "sinuous," meaning, "having many curves or
bends." Like most things, we just shortened it, to "sine" in this case.
