Agreed.

I would agree for people who are restoring old kit so people can see what it
looks like, how it worked, and what it sounded like. I love working on boat
anchors. Tubes are a thing of beauty. (My OTL HiFi audio power amp has 22
tubes that glow most lovingly in the dark.)

But most people running AM today are using modern rigs. These are rigs that
already run SSB. Let a little carrier leak through but continue to suppress
the unneeded sideband and you can get all that without throwing away 88% of
the power. Oh, and you gain 3dB at the receive end by cutting the
noise-admittance bandwidth in half. Use SAM to synchronize with the carrier
for perfect exalted-carrier demodulation.

That does beg the question -- will the SAM decoder lock onto a
single-sideband reduced-carrier signal? If not, it would be cool to
implement that. Give the broadcaster wannabes a HiFi mode that doesn't need
fancy tuning but doesn't take up massive bandwidth to do it.

Sorry. I think too much.
