Well in my case, I can respond to that. I recently worked a real "old-timer" who is a local. He was able to run only AM and we got on 75M one evening to shoot the breeze. I had never run the Flex on AM but pushed the button and away I went.
The "old-timer" was flabbergasted at how well the Flex sounded. Understand that I had everything set up for my normal SSB operation and just hit the AM button. We had a very nice contact and because of the old-timer's somewhat celebrity on AM, he attracted a crowd. One station broke in to interrogate me about the Flex and the microphone I was using. I've never owned any real high level modulation AM equipment, just rice boxes that could conjure up some form of AM, some of which did a nice job. This first experience with the Flex has tempted me to experiment a bit more on AM. Oh, and the synchronous AM detection on receive was major cool. I do have one request, however. It would be nice if the transmit monitor worked on AM. Perhaps that's a big deal? I recorded our QSO but did not get my side of the QSO as I normally do in SSB mode. AM to me is just another part of ham radio that some enjoy.
