Sheesh, guys, I wasn't picking on Drax, I was pointing out that *MOST* of
the time (see Gerald's note, above), the problem he was having is a FireWire
problem, not a radio problem.

I experienced this in my early days with the radio when I could not get it
to talk to the PC. I knew all about cables, I thought, and checked several
times to assure that my FW cable was well seated on both ends. No dice.
Went to RatShack and bought a five buck cheapie. Worked like a charm.
Except that it was full of RF, Rat Shack having wasted no money on either
shielding or ferrites. Ordered a Granite cable. Plugged it in. Cute
little LED went green. And...no communication.

Finally, I began to think. Turning the PC around, I could see that the
molded plastic around the FW connector, both on the first cable I tried and
on the Granite, was just a hair too big to allow the plug to seat fully in
the jack. It *looked* like it seated, but it didn't quite. Two minutes
with a Dremel tool and the problem was resolved.

So...Drax, if you felt like I was putting you down, I apologize. I wasn't
annoyed with you. I was annoyed with the phenomenon of people making snap
judgments like, "This new version .19 is too flakey for me." That kind of
remark (1) doesn't help to find a solution to the problem, (2) implies a
dismissive attitude toward the extraordinary work of the Flex team, and (3)
may well have a toxic effect on potential Flexers who might decide, on the
basis of such comments, not to buy the machine. And that would be a shame,
not only because Gerald wouldn't get to buy his Lamborghini but because that
individual would not experience the pleasure of running this truly
remarkable radio?

I am not a fanboi. In fact, anyone who knows me well will tell you that, if
anything, I am an ANTI fanboi. The Flex range is not perfect by a long
chalk. There are things that don't work quite right, which can be problems
for everyone, and things that I wish had been implemented differently, which
may be problems only for me. So I am not chiding Drax or anyone else for
pointing out legitimate problems/concerns or making suggestions for
improvement. However, I submit that there is a big difference between
saying things like:

"I'm having a problem with."
"Has anyone else experienced?"
"This doesn't seem to work like I think it should."
or even
"I'm so frustrated that I'm about to have a screaming temper tantrum"

Versus dismissive comments such as:

"...too flakey for me"
and variations on that theme (Check eHam if you want to find some lurking
amongst the fulsome praises.)

No bones broken, I hope, Drax. Again I apologize if I hurt your feelings or
made you feel put down.

Bill

We are learning that '.19 *does* have a few flakey bits but I will bet you
100 drachmas that this isn't one of them.
