Yes and let me clarify quickly.  I said exactly what Gerald said.  It has led 
to a process for software development and many of the features you see today 
are a result of all that went in to it.  I also pointed out the commercial 
offerings and how much resource they took BUT THESE RESOURCES WERE PAID FOR BY 
THE CONTRACTS.  I can think of many ways amateur radio has benefitted directly. 
 For example, Flex 1500 came from having Graham on staff.  But if anyone thinks 
a $650 radio paid for Graham , well, you aren't a business person....

There will not ever likely be a day when you can download or purchase "deep 
impact" but every day and with every new development you are seeing it.  The 
new libraries incorporating major new features and improved support for several 
things are witness to the Deep Impact it is having.  That said, I wish I had 
NEVER suggested this name.
