If you're not powering any devices off the firewire port, then no, you don't
need to hook it up. I don't have the external DC connected; I'm only using
it with the 5K so I didn't bother. But, if you want to hook it up but you
don't have any spare connectors from your power supply, regular old 4-pin PC
power "Y" splitter cables are easy to find.
