It depends, of course. On the C172RG, it is a vertical moving lever just to the right of the elevator trim, with no automation. Newer aircraft designs often use motorized flaps, with a three position switch on the panel for open/close/auto. The latter monitors the oil temperature and opens/closes for you as the temperature moves. For the normal C172, there are no movable flaps and the modeling concern is irrelevant.
