These are actually harmless error messages for lines that aren't even
executed by your version of automake, but the error checker isn't as
smart as it could be and doesn't know about automake conditionals.

At some point we might have to just stop supporting the older version
of automake and go with the new.  Kind of like MS shipping new
versions of word with a format incompatible with the older versions
... it forces everyone to upgrade weather they want to or not.  At
least in this case it only costs a bit of time and no $$$.

<sigh> Yet another incompatibility with different installations of
automake (even within the same version.)
